Grapefruit Mimosa

With the traditional mimosa with orange juice so popular, I don’t know why I never tried a Grapefruit Mimosa. The grapefruit juice is so refreshing and pairs really well with sparkling wine or champagne.

Mimosa with Grapefruit Juice

In the words of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Why do I drink champagne for breakfast? Doesn’t everyone? I certainly do any chance I get, and I love to serve it to guests alongside this breakfast charcuterie board or these easy to make egg bites.

Mimosas just make everything more festive, don’t they? Maybe it’s the bubbles. Perhaps it’s the pretty flute glasses. But when someone hands me a sparkling mimosa, especially before lunchtime, it just feels like the beginning of a party. Speaking of parties, will you be watching the Paris Olympics? We’ll be sipping this World Record cocktail!

When a recipe is this delicious and has only two ingredients, it’s definitely a keeper. Grapefruits are available at grocery stores all year long, so look for those ruby reds in winter. This makes this a perfect cocktail not just for summer but also for the holidays.

What You Need To Make it

Grapefruit juice, champagne, and fresh grapefruit on a tray.

You’ll need just two ingredients for the drink and optional garnishes, which I always recommend.

  • Champagne or sparkling wine of your choice: we used Une Femme Sparkling Wine, which is available at Target and a women-owned company.
  • Grapefruit juice: choose your favorite.
  • Optional garnish: we use a slice of grapefruit and a piece of fresh mint.

Serving Suggestions

We love this simple cocktail in plain flute glasses, but you could get more fancy and serve it in these elegant squared off flutes. If you’re serving these out by the pool, pick up some plastic flutes. There’s nothing worse than broken glass in or around the pool, and you can get 100 for under $30.

If you can chill your glasses ahead of time, it really does make a difference.

A great idea for parties is to have a Mimosa Bar with different variations of mimosas like the classic mimosa, pink mimosa, mango mimosa, or cranberry mimosa. Mimosas make the perfect brunch cocktail.

You could set your bar up with bottles of champagne and carafes of juice or simply have an entire carafe of grapefruit mimosas and other varieties so people can simply pour what they’d like to drink.

Take your drink to the next level by dipping the rim of the champagne glass in sugar for a festive touch. Colored sugar is fun, too. Choose pink or blue for a baby shower or red for Valentine’s Day.

We always serve food whenever we’re serving cocktails. Our Maryland Crab Dip is a popular one along with a Brie Charcuterie Board or anything from this list of easy cold appetizers.

Tips & Variations

Always have your garnishes ready to go before making cocktails. I’ve learned that one from mistakes!

We usually reserve expensive champagne for drinking on its own. For mimosas, we use less expensive champagne or sparkling wine.

We usually make mimosas with equal parts of juice and champagne, but you can make them weaker or stronger depending on your preference. When our kids were younger, we had a Christmas tradition of serving them juice and sparkling grape juice in champagne flutes while my husband and I had our mimosas. Now that they’re adults, it’s mimosas all around! The red cranberry juice mimosa is especially fun for the Christmas holidays.

Switch up the juice to pink grapefruit juice for a sweeter flavor. If you like your cocktails even sweeter, add a little simple syrup. St-Germaine Elderflower liqueur or Grand Marnier adds a nice sweet flavor to mimosas, too.

Use a vacuum cork in between pourings of sparkling wine or champagne. We always cork our wine when we have any left, but especially with sparkling wine, you want to preserve those bubbles for as long as possible.

Don’t save mimosas for a special occasion. Life is too short for that. Why not surprise your significant other with a grapefruit mimosa this weekend?
