Greek cuisine has been turning simple ingredients like ground nuts, olive oil, honey, and orange zest into memorable sweets since ancient Greece. Over time, influences from Asia Minor and the Balkan countries blended with traditions from northern Greece, shaping desserts across the region.

A great way to explore the country is to hop on a ferry and go Greek island hopping. You’ll get away from the crowds and taste the real flavors of Greece. Be sure to check out my top things to do in Naxos, Greece. And for any trip, grab my free packing list!

Some treats, like the spoon sweets known as glyka tou koutaliou, trace back to Byzantine times, while others, including the butter cookies made for Christmas holidays, are newer additions to the Greek table.

That long history is part of what made the sweets I discovered while exploring the Cyclades so unforgettable. My travels gave me an even greater appreciation for the pastry shops, family recipes, and sweet flavors found throughout Greece.

For now, let’s take a look at eleven popular Greek desserts, from creamy semolina custard and traditional Greek butter cookies to honey‑soaked baklava and bright, citrusy orange cake.

Why We Love These Recipes

  • They show how varied Greek sweets can be. These recipes range from classic Greek desserts with layers of phyllo dough and ground nuts to creamy custards, buttery cookies, syrup-soaked cake, and bite-sized pieces made for sharing.
  • The flavors are simple but delicious. Orange peel, lemon zest, ground cinnamon, honey, and sugar syrup give each delicious Greek dessert its own unique flavor without requiring complicated ingredients.
  • There is a recipe here for every occasion. Traditional Greek pastries are a natural choice for special occasions, while a slice of portokalopita with vanilla ice cream is the perfect sweet finish to dinner.

Let me know which one of these you look forward to trying the most.
