Can’t take a trip to the Caribbean Islands? Here’s the next best thing!
What is Rum Punch?
Rum punch is a summer cocktail with tropical flavor that combines two kinds of rum along with fruity juices. There are different rum punch recipes out there, but this basic Jamaican version is the most popular, and the one you will probably be served when taking a Montego Bay vacation.
Another of our favorite Jamaican recipes from this tropical paradise is this slightly boozy Jamaican Easter Bun. Once you taste it, you’ll be making it all year long.
Jamaican Rum Punch Recipe Ingredients
We’ve used simple ingredients just like they would in Jamaica.
- Two kinds of rum in this rum punch give this tropical cocktail the perfect balance between sweet and spicy. The dark spiced rum gives this a little kick and is delicious when paired with the light Rum.
- We used a mixture of orange juice, pineapple juice, and cranberry juice, along with a splash of grenadine.
Other than that, you’ll just need a garnish of your choice. We used orange slices and maraschino cherries.
How to Make a Perfect Jamaican Rum Punch
Add an ounce of both orange juice and pineapple juice to a cocktail shaker.
Pour an ounce of white rum into the shaker.
Add the dark spiced rum.
Pour in the cranberry juice.
Just a splash of grenadine will add a little sweetness and color. Don’t overdo it as nothing will ruin a drink quicker than heavy use of grenadine syrup. If you don’t like grenadine, use simple syrup instead.
Add ice and shake to combine everything and chill the drink.
Add fresh ice to the cocktail glass. Strain the drink into the glass.
Garnish with a fresh slice of orange and a maraschino cherry. A pineapple wedge also makes a festive tropical cocktail.
How strong is Rum?
We used Classic Bacardi rum in this recipe which is 37.4% alcohol, not to be confused with Bacardi 151 which is 75.5%.
What other juices can I use?
Just about any fruit juice will be delicious in this cocktail. I’d try peach juice, apple juice, or a fruit punch mix.
Can I make this rum punch ahead of time?
You can! You’ll want to skip any steps where you add ice. Once your party guests arrive, simply pour it over ice.
Tips for Making a Rum Punch Cocktail
Though Bacardi is one of the most popular rums, try different types of rum. Malibu coconut rum would be so delicious for a change. If you like coconut, you will love this addition!
To get a pretty ombre color, add an extra splash of grenadine.
A little strawberry syrup and a squeeze of lime will get you another popular Jamaican cocktail called Reggae Rum Punch.
If you don’t have an ice maker, buy a big bag of ice or fill up a bunch of ice cube trays (and keep them filled) as this drink should be served ice cold!
For your next party, why not serve this in a large punch bowl to make it easier for guests to grab a cocktail? Begin by figuring out how many ounces it can hold and doing the simple math.
On average, you’ll need about 60 ounces of rum for a rum punch that serves 20. So for this drink, the juices will be multiplied by 30, so 30 ounces of orange juice, 30 ounces of pineapple juice, etc. You get the idea. You can serve this in a large pitcher to make pouring easier but not quite as festive.
