Do you tune in for the most memorable events during the Olympics, or do you prefer certain sports and only tune in for your favorites?

  • Already holding world records in all three backstroke disciplines, Aussie Kaylee McKeown almost broke her own world record earlier this year.
  • “Mondo” Duplantis has broken the world record for pole vaulting eight times. Can he beat his own record, or will someone else take it?
  • No one has broken the women’s 200 mm track record since Flo-Jo did it back in 1988. This year, all eyes will be on Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, as she was within 7 seconds of the record at the World Athletics Championship 2023.
  • USA’s Hampton Morris broke the senior weightlifting record at the 2024 IWF World Cup in Thailand. This is not a sport I typically watch, but I can’t wait to see if he breaks his own record or at least keeps it. He is the first American man to hold the record in 55 years.
  • Sam Watson broke the world record in sport climbing twice at the World Cup event in China and is expected to break it again on the Olympic stage.

This year, I’ll be watching these five sports to see who will break the world records, and I’ll be toasting each one with our World Record cocktail, French Sidecar cocktail, French 75, and Grapefruit Mimosa.

I hope I’ve piqued your interest in a few sports you usually wouldn’t tune in for. Let’s all raise our World Record Cocktail to many more world records from the US and worldwide.

What You Need to Make the World Record Cocktail

This refreshing cocktail surprisingly gets its reddish color from Pinot Noir! Who would think of mixing tequila and wine? Actually, many people! I’ve seen margaritas made with white and red wine, and The Lone Ranger cocktail is made with tequila and rose.

Ingredients to make the World Record cocktail.
  • 1½ ounces tequila
  • 1½ ounces Pinot Noir
  • ½ ounce lime juice (freshly squeezed)
  • ½ ounce agave
  • Ice
  • 2 ounces grapefruit soda like Fresca
  • Lime or lemon wedge

How To Make a World Record Cocktail

Add your favorite pinot noir. If you’re thinking you’ll use what’s left of that awful bottle you opened months ago, don’t do it. I’m not suggesting you use a really good bottle in this drink, but use something you like. You can buy a very inexpensive Pinot Noir that will pair great with tequila for around $10.

Shake quickly to chill, but not too long, as it will become watered down.

Strain your World Record Cocktail over fresh ice in a cocktail glass, leaving room for soda.

Tips & Variations

  • You can adjust the sweetness of this cocktail by adding more or less agave. For a more robust citrus flavor, you can add more freshly squeezed lime juice. You can also add a splash of cranberry juice for added flavor.
  • Experiment with different types of tequila or wine to customize the taste of your cocktail.
  • If you don’t have grapefruit soda, feel free to improvise. You could use ginger ale mixed with a splash of grapefruit juice or simply use ginger ale. Grapefruit bitters is also an option to add a little of the grapefruit flavor without adding juice. Make your own homemade grapefruit soda, and you may never buy it again.
  • Note: Grapefruit juice does interfere with the metabolization of some medications, so keep that in mind if you are on medications and check to be sure it’s okay to drink. If you need to substitute, try orange juice with ginger ale or a lemon-flavored soda.
  • You can rim the glasses with salt or sugar before pouring the cocktail to enhance the presentation.
