🛒 What Goes Into This Recipe

Odds are good that you probably have many of the ingredients for this dip already in your house. If you need to pick them up, they’re easy to find and affordable too!

Sweet dessert dip ingredients.

Key Ingredients

1. Cream Cheese. For the creamiest dip, use blocks of regular cream cheese. Whipped cream cheese may look like it has the texture you’d want, but because it has a higher moisture content, your dip won’t be as rich.

2. Cool Whip and Marshmallow Fluff. The texture for this dip comes from the fluffy ingredients: Cool Whip and Marshmallow Fluff. Using Cool Whip instead of whipped cream means that your dip will hold together and not lose its fluffiness.

3. Chocolate Mints. You can either use Andes chocolate mints broken up into pieces, or use mint chocolate baking chips. Either one works equally as well.

📖 Variations

There are so many other dessert dips that you can do based on this one for all sorts of holiday parties. Which one will you make for your next Christmas party?

Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cake Dip Replace the marshmallow fluff with one package of Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes. Use a food processor to blend the ingredients. If the dip is too crumbly, add more Cool Whip.

Christmas Sugar Cookie Dip. Omit the Andes mint chocolates or mint chocolate chips. Simply stir in 1 cup of sugar cookie mix (dry) and substitute white chocolate chips for the mini chocolate chips. If the dip is too stiff, add a little more Cool Whip until you get the desired texture.

Candy Cane Cheesecake Dip. Add in one 3.4-ounce box of Jell-O Cheesecake Instant Pudding and Pie Filling Mix. If the dip is too stiff, add a bit of milk one tablespoon at a time until you get the desired consistency.

Gingerbread Dip.  Omit the Andes chocolate mints or mint chocolate chips. Blend in one cup of gingerbread cookie mix. If the dip is too stiff, you can add milk one tablespoon at a time until it gets the consistency that you’d like.

Hot Cocoa Dip. Mix in four packets of instant hot chocolate mix without marshmallows and omit the Andes chocolate mints or mint chocolate chips. Fold in ¼ cup of mini marshmallows before serving, and sprinkle a few more on top.

Grinch Dip. Mix ¼ c. shredded coconut with 2 tablespoons of green food coloring. Sprinkle a layer of green coconut on top for a classic “grinchy” look.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I soften cream cheese?

The easiest way to soften cream cheese is to leave it on a plate for half an hour to an hour at room temperature. To speed things up, you can cut the cream cheese into smaller slices. You can microwave cream cheese (but take it out of the foil first!). Microwave for 10-15 seconds at a time and check to make sure it isn’t melting.

What’s the difference between Cool Whip and whipped cream?

Whipped Cream is just that – heavy cream that has been whipped, and usually has some sugar or other sweetener added. Cool Whip only contains a small amount of cream. It is mostly skim milk, vegetable oil, and corn syrup. This is what gives it the different texture.

Can cream cheese dips be frozen?

Yes, but you may not want to. Freezing and thawing the cream cheese dip can cause it to separate a bit and the texture to become less pleasant. If you are going to freeze it, try to do so in an airtight container if possible, but it is really best just to make this dip and not freeze it.

💭 Top Tips

Get creative with your serving bowl. If you have a Christmas tree-shaped dish, use that to hold the dip. Then decorate it to look like a Christmas tree with candies.

Use this dip for piles of “snow” around a gingerbread house – and then let people break apart the gingerbread house to enjoy the dip!

Dust with edible glitter or sparkling sugar to give it a shimmery appearance. It won’t change the flavor or texture really, but it will add a little extra pizazz. If you’d rather add some holiday colors, get creative! Bring out your red and green sprinkles, holiday sprinkles, or any festive sprinkles that strike your fancy.
