Blackberry Tequila Smash Cocktail
There’s something magical about muddling fresh blackberries with tequila and citrus. This Blackberry Tequila Smash recipe is the perfect cocktail for anyone who loves a balance of sweet, tart, and refreshing flavors all in one glass.
This has become one of my go-to tequila cocktails when I want something that feels special but doesn’t require a million ingredients or complicated techniques.
The deep purple color from the blackberries makes this drink absolutely gorgeous, and the flavor is even better than it looks. Whether you’re entertaining friends or just treating yourself after a long day, this cocktail hits the spot every single time.
Having a gathering? Serve this frozen mezcal margarita or this skinny vodka margarita for those who don’t like tequila. And always serve something to munch on when you have company. Check out some of my favorite appetizers.
Why You’ll Love this Blackberry Tequila Smash
This isn’t your average tequila cocktail. The fresh blackberries bring a natural sweetness and beautiful color that you just can’t get from store-bought mixers. Here’s why this recipe works so well:
Fresh ingredients make all the difference: Using real blackberries instead of syrup gives you authentic fruit flavor and a stunning presentation.
Incredibly easy to make: A little muddling, some shaking, and you’re done. No fancy equipment needed beyond a basic cocktail shaker.
Perfectly balanced flavor profile: The tequila provides a smooth base, the blackberries add sweetness and depth, the lime brings brightness, and the mint ties it all together.
Beautiful to serve: The deep purple color and fresh garnishes make this cocktail look like something you’d order at a high-end bar.
What You Need to Make It
Just a handful of ingredients and you’re on your way to sipping this delicious drink. See the full printable recipe card at the bottom for complete instructions.
- 10-12 fresh blackberries
- 6-7 mint leaves
- 4 ounces reposado tequila
- 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
- 3-4 ounces sparkling water
- Extra fresh blackberries and mint sprigs for garnish
- Ice
How to Make Our Blackberry Tequila Smash
Add blackberries and mint leaves to a cocktail shaker.
Gently smash together using a cocktail muddler or the back of a wooden spoon. You want to release the juices and oils, but you don’t need to pulverize everything into a paste.
Add ice to the shaker.
Pour in the tequila.
Add lemon juice.
Shake well to combine and chill. Don’t shake too long or the cocktail will become diluted.
Add fresh ice to two rocks glasses.
Strain the mixture evenly into two glasses. You can double strain through a fine mesh strainer to catch any blackberry seeds.
Top each drink with sparkling water.
Garnish each with a sprig of fresh mint and a blackberry.
Tips & Tricks
- Don’t skip the muddling step. This is what releases all those wonderful flavors from the blackberries and mint. Just don’t go overboard or you’ll end up with bitter mint.
- Adjust the sweetness to your taste. Depending on the sweetness of your berries, the drink may need a little simple syrup. Add to your liking. Agave syrup works well, too.
- Use a good quality tequila. Since tequila is the main spirit here, the kind of tequila you use really matters. Look for 100% agave tequila. It’s aged in oak barrels for a deeper flavor.
- Make it in a pitcher for parties. You can easily scale this recipe up for cocktail hour for a crowd. Just muddle the blackberries and mint in a large pitcher, add the other ingredients, and stir well.
- Try frozen blackberries in a pinch. While fresh is best, frozen blackberries work when fresh ones aren’t available. It’s best to thaw them first.
Variations
Sometimes I start thinking of new ways to make a drink after the first sip! That’s how I felt with this cocktail. Next time, try one of the below variations and let me know if you come up with something new!
Spicy Blackberry Smash: Add a slice of jalapeño to the muddling process for a kick of heat.
Smoky Version: Use mezcal instead of tequila for a smoky twist.
Berry Blend: Mix in more fresh fruit like raspberries or blueberries along with the blackberries.
Herbal Twist: Try basil or thyme instead of mint for a different flavor profile.
Switch up the Citrus: Try fresh lime juice instead of lemon juice.
Fizzy Smash: Top with prosecco instead of club soda for a celebratory version.
This is the kind of cocktail you’ll come back to again and again. It’s bright, fresh, and just a little unexpected, with plenty of room to make it your own—lean a little sweeter, add more citrus for a tart edge, or swap in herbs for a different twist.
Start with ripe blackberries and a good tequila, give it a quick shake, and you’ve got something that feels a little special without trying too hard. I hope this becomes your new warm weather favorite, too.
