Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe

My daughters discovered the Monte Cristo Sandwich at a waterfront restaurant we found when we moved to Florida. As large as the menu is at Pier 22  (seriously, it’s like a book!) all my girls want is the Monte Cristo.

If you've had the Monte Cristo Sandwich, you know it's made like French toast. Slices of ham and Swiss cheese between two slices of bread, dipped in egg batter, browned, and sprinkled with powdered sugar. To top it off, there is a dipping sauce.

My daughters discovered the Monte Cristo sandwich when they were 13 and 10, and still would rather have it than anything else on the menu, even at 20 and almost 24. So of course, I had to learn to make it at home.

When I was in New York City a couple of months ago at the Fancy Food Show with the Mom Blog Tour, I had the pleasure of meeting with the team from Felix Jams.

Owned by one of Sweden’s largest food companies, Orkla Foods Sweden, the history of Felix Jams goes back to the 1930s when Herbert Felix joined a small factory that produced vinegar.

His passion for preserves was the beginning of Felix Jams, and it is one of the most renowned companies in Sweden today.

When we met with the team from Felix, we discovered that Lingonberries grow all over Sweden. We also discovered that Lingonberries make a really wonderful jam…

Jam that can be used in so many different recipes!

You can trust me when I say I tried every one! So delicious! And one of my readers said he loves Felix Jam in his meatball recipe! Can’t wait to try that one!

Enjoy this recipe I created for a Monte Cristo with Felix Lingonberry Jam. And if you’re a fan of cheese, you’ve got to try this cheese tart recipe I made for Wisconsin Cheese!

What You’ll Need

This is such an easy recipe! For two sandwiches, you’ll need bread, butter, ham – thinly sliced, sliced Swiss cheese, eggs, milk, nutmeg, salt and pepper, and powdered sugar for sprinkling on top.

You probably have a lot of that in your pantry. If you don’t have Felix Lingonberries Jam, pick up a jar on your next shopping trip. It makes these sandwiches extra delicious.

How to Make It

Whisk the eggs until their foamy.

Add milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg, and mix well.

Lightly spread butter on the inside of the bread slices.

Melt remaining butter in a large skillet.

Melt the Felix Jam (I used the microwave for about 20 seconds, but you can use the stove, too)

Place the jam in a small bowl.

Place 4 pieces of ham and 2 pieces of cheese on slices of buttered bread.

Place sandwiches in egg mixture, soaking up just a little of the mixture into the bread.

Don’t leave the bread too long or you won’t have enough of the mixture for a second sandwich!

Place sandwiches in a skillet over medium-high heat.

Cook on each side, trying not to disturb until browned. They will smell heavenly.

Remove from pan and place on a paper towel to blot excess butter.

Sprinkle sandwiches with powdered sugar.
